Busy week here at Inside the Bucs Basement! Craig wrote a killer piece on the Arizona Fall League. Corey and Justin wrote about the possibility of David Bednar being moved, and you all responded with the biggest numbers we’ve pulled since July.

Busy week, both for me and baseball. The World Series just wrapped up with Houston grabbing another title, and with the last out came the official start of the offseason. In fact, would you believe we’ve already had our first offseason trade?

Hello, and welcome to this week’s Five Pirates Thoughts at Five.

Not that it should be a surprise, but the Pirates didn’t really do much since we last talked. Oh sure they went and claimed yet another waiver catcher, but nothing substantial was done.

Well, the first edition of this piece in quite some time in which I don’t have games to pull tidbits from. Instead, it’ll mark the first heel turn toward 2023 for me personally and largely this site.

The Pirates have managed to hold off 100 losses for at least one more day, and as usual, they do it in the most unthinkable way. Think of how bad this team has been in 2022, then think of some of the strangest things they’ve pulled off.

There is simply no room for positives when one aspect of your team is this bad. The Pirates bullpen has completely imploded and no matter what goes right, who comes up, whom takes a step, the good feelings can only last about as long as the team can hold out before having to turn it over to the bullpen.

A sweep of the Reds quickly followed by a sweep from the Mets. Progress negated in a single predictable series. Thing is folks, as I’ve said countless times, the losing is one thing, losing as badly as the Pirates did in this series, that’s what makes you feel like nothing is improving.
