The Pittsburgh Pirates started strong but are now struggling. Key player, Oneil Cruz, needs improvement. Fundamental coaching and players’ performance are vital as the team aims for a .500 season with potential growth. Rowdy Tellez’s hitting performance and Roansy Contreras’s pitching need attention.

Some interesting storylines are just starting to take shape, so today let’s think through some of the train lights we see coming from afar.

Hey! 8-2, not too shabby huh? Your Buccos have simply played a hard 9 innings in all 10 games they’ve played, and some of the teams they’ve faced don’t have the horses to run a relay race like that. It’s why their baseline for wins should rightly be closer to .500 than some pundits decided it would be pre-season.

There’s a lot to like when your team doesn’t lose, and so far, ours hasn’t. I’m not going to spend today telling you how wrong you are for getting excited, but I’m going to try to provide some context for what we’re watching.

The Roster is set, and we’ll talk all about it in detail when I release the Steel City Pirates 2024 Season Preview tomorrow. I can’t avoid touching on some of it today but I’ll have individual thoughts about every player selected along with a whole bunch of fun prediction stuff we can all chew on and hold up as examples of my stupidity. I did get the record prediction right last year but it sure as hell didn’t come about in the way I envisioned.
